The cradle of the Mark lies in the middle of the Havel. Surrounded by water, island after island. Not many places have two old towns, one of which is called Neustadt. And the churches do not conform to conventional ideas either. The Cathedral of St. Peter and Paul is relatively small and the parish church of St. Katharinen is very large. All reasons to take a closer look at the city.

Overland to Brandenburg, through avenues, past lakes and across the Havel on the ferry at Ketzin. It is a beautiful excursion if you approach the city from the east.

The transition from modern to historic buildings is abrupt at Neustädtischer Markt and in Steinstraße. You can quickly leave this part of the city behind you and turn into Kurstraße. Continue to St. Catherine’s Church, North German brick Gothic, beautiful and richly decorated, a valuable interior with Wagner organ, golden winged altar, side chapels and old gravestones. Stroll along the main street, shop and have a coffee, then cross the Havel into the old town. The ruins of St. John’s Church have been converted into a cultural venue. Large glass surfaces instead of missing walls have turned the building back into a music and exhibition hall.

One of the famous people from Brandenburg is Vicco von Bülow, alias Loriot (one of the best-known German humorists). Brandenburg has erected a monument to him with Mr. Müller-Lüdenscheid, who sits on a bench at the town hall opposite the Roland, and 24 “Waldmöpse” (a Pug with antlers) scattered around the city. “Waldmops”-tours are offered, but it’s also fun to look for them yourself.

The path to the cathedral island is long and bridges are rare. The cathedral is the “mother of all Brandenburg churches”. Formerly a parish of its own, today a district of Brandenburg. An enclosed castle, with walls and gates. Purely medieval, a place to rest and relax. You can eat and drink well in the Remise restaurant. Cross the Havel on Mühlendamm and return to the new town.

Brandenburg has dressed up well for BuGa 2016. A few years ago it was still pretty unsightly, but that has changed. If the city still manages to eliminate the vacancies in the city center and develop concepts for new stores and uses, it will become more and more beautiful.
