Everything in Berlin smells of lockdown. The second time this year, one last trip and what fits better than the Havelland. Get out of the confinement, enjoy the wide open spaces and let yourself drift a little. Shortly after Nauen suddenly hundreds of cranes are on the meadows and thousands are moving across the afternoon sky to their feeding grounds. It is a majestic sight to watch these large birds with their cries.

A short tour of Berge, a village on the B5 just before Ribbeck. A small village church, freshly restored, a beautifully designed village center and some bizarre pictures.

In Ribbeck everything revolves around the pear and of course Fontane, who made both famous here. In the distillery of the von Ribbeck family you can get pear brandy and liqueur, in the castle a small but elaborate exhibition about Fontane and his wanderings. Lots of multimedia in cosy corners and a big pear. The pear cake in the Cafe Waschhaus is all gone, they didn’t expect so many guests today. Rain was also announced, but did not come. We got two more pieces and the two older ladies from Spandau at the big table prefer to share one, they are very big pieces. For the new guests there are consolation cookies, pear-shaped.

On the way back, stop by one of the many stalls and buy some pears or pear compote or pear jelly, maybe a pumpkin after all. For a change.
